An organisation's policies around its people (staff, human resources) come in all shapes and sizes and are generally aimed at setting out the Company's position on various terms and conditions of employment.

Employers may also develop policies:

  • because they're required under relevant legislation;
  • in order to mitigate risk, including with respect to vicarious liability; and, of course
  • to define and regulate standards of behaviour in the workplace, and how the employer will address concerns.

Though policies should be tailored to align with the nature of the business and its workforce, there are some common types of policies that have utility and as such should be in place.

This webinar provided key recommendations and practical guidance on:

  • general principles, including the utility of policies and how policies interact with contracts and industrial instruments;
  • the types of policies that typically are, and should be, in place; and
  • recommended terms (and terms to avoid).
